FREIBAUM, SEQUEIRA JOIN WOMEN’S SOCCER STAFF

Head Coach Lauryn Hutchinson welcomes Matt Freibaum and Mario Sequeira

RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Women's Soccer head coach Lauryn Hutchinson announced the addition of assistant coaches Matt Freibaum and Mario Sequeira to complete her coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season.

Sequeira and Freibaum, each make their return to VCU to take on coaching roles in Hutchinson's staff, both former Rams men's soccer student-athletes.
 
Freibaum arrives at VCU following four seasons coaching for American University women's soccer. In his time at AU, Freibaum held titles of Director of Operations, Director of Player Development, and Recruiting Coordinator. He worked with the attacking unit, and American secured eight all-conference honors in his time at AU, including three athletes named to All-Patriot League teams in 2022.

Prior to AU, Freibaum spent two seasons at Wofford, leading the team to double its scoring output from 2019 to spring 2021. With the Terriers, he served as Director of Operations and Recruiting Coordinator, bringing in two players who earned 2021 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team honors.

Sequeira, a former five-year goalkeeper for the Rams' men's soccer team, joins the VCU staff with both local and international coaching experience. Most recently serving as a goalkeeper and assistant coach with CD Malilla in Valencia, Spain, during an apprenticeship. He has also spent time developing young athletes as a coach at Richmond Goalkeeping Academy and FC Richmond in the city.

As a Ram, Sequeira totaled over 6,400 minutes in goal for VCU and led the Rams to a 33-23-9 record with 21 shutouts, including a career-high eight as a freshman. In his fifth and final year at VCU, he posted an .889 save percentage with 0.79 goals against average.
