VCU ADVANCES TO A-10 SEMIFINALS FOR FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY

Ashley Karn scored a career-high five goals

The short story:  VCU fended off a third quarter rally from No. 3 seed Davidson to advance to the Atlantic 10 Semifinals for the first time in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU went up 2-0 in just 2:01 of action to take an early lead after goals from Koneke and Karn
  • The Rams led 5-3 heading into the second quarter after Karn's second goal of the afternoon with just 13 seconds left in the first
  • The Wildcats got within 5-4 with 12:25 before halftime but VCU scored four unanswered goals, two of them coming from Karn, to build a 9-4 advantage with 5:39 left in the half. VCU would lead 9-5 at the break
  • The Rams led by as much as 11-5 early in the third quarter but Davidson cut VCU's lead to just 11-9 with 1:34 left in the third quarter after four unanswered goals
  • VCU got a goal from Sam Palmer with 38 seconds left in the third to stop the run and shift momentum as VCU scored five of the game's final six goals to pull away
