VCU duo combines for 40 points in wire-to-wire victory

The short story: Max Shulga flirted with a triple-double, and Joe Bamisile poured in a game-high 22 points to spark VCU to a win over Miami on the final day of the Charleston Classic Sunday.
OPENING TIP
- For the second time in two weeks, Shulga approached a triple-double. He finished with 18 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Shulga knocked down 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. He totaled eight points, eight assists and six rebounds in the first half alone
- Bamisile connected on 9-of-17 attempts from the floor, including 4-of-10 from 3-point range, on the way to his third 20-point performance of the season. He added five rebounds and a pair of steals
- Graduate guard Zeb Jackson came off the bench to chip in 12 points and three rebounds for VCU
- Lynn Kidd led Miami with 14 points and 10 rebounds
THE DIFFERENCE
- VCU shot 51 percent (28-of-55) from the floor, while limiting the Hurricanes to just 40 percent (24-of-60) shooting, including 6-of-23 from 3-point territory
- The Rams matched a season-low with 11 turnovers, including just three in the first half, as they built a 42-33 lead at the break
- Shulga and Bamisile ignited a 13-2 VCU run midway through the first half with back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Rams a 33-21 advantage with 6:46 left in the period
- The Hurricanes pulled within five, at 53-48 on a bucket by Isaiah Johnson-Arigu with 12:24 remaining, but Bamisile collected a steal and took it coast-to-coast and Shulga drilled a triple to spark a 13-2 VCU run to push the Black and Gold out to its largest lead of the day at 66-50 with 8:32 on the clock
NOTABLE
- VCU never trailed Sunday and led for a total of 39:05 in the contest
- This was the first meeting between these two programs since 2007
NEXT UP
VCU will host Elizabeth City State on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. That match-up with air on MASN and ESPN+, and will include a ceremony to retire the jersey of Rams' great Joey Rodriguez.
