RAMS FALL ON LAST SECOND SHOT IN A-10 FIRST ROUND

The short story: VCU and La Salle battled back-and-forth in a game with 11 lead changes and six ties but the Explorers hit the game-winning shot with 0.2 seconds left on the clock to win the game.
 
OPENING TIP:

  • Mary-Anna Asare led VCU with 20 points and four rebounds
  • Mykel Parham grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and had two points
  • Valentina Ojeda was the other Ram in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting
  • VCU shot 38.5 percent from the floor and 27.8 percent from 3-point range. La Salle shot 36.5 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from 3-point range

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Rams took an 8-3 lead with 8:38 left in the first quarter behind two 3-pointers from Asare
  • VCU maintained its lead at 16-11 at the end of the first quarter
  • La Salle outscored VCU 12-4 in the second quarter as the Rams' offense struggled and the Explorers led 23-20 at halftime
  • VCU found an offensive rhythm in the third quarter, shooting 43.8 percent from the floor in the third quarter but trailed La Salle 36-35 heading into the fourt
  • The Rams and Explorers traded the lead six times in the fourth quarter with three lead changes
  • VCU took a 48-46 lead with 42 seconds after two Asare free throws but La Salle tied the game at 48-48 with 37 seconds left
  • The Rams had two chances to go ahead, missing two layups in the last two seconds. The Explorers got the ball back and scored with 0.2 seconds remaining on a layup from Ashleigh Connor
