BONNIES OVERCOME VCU RALLY TO CAPTURE SERIES

VCU launched a season-high five home runs and drew 10 walks

THE SHORT STORY: With play split across two days due to weather conditions, VCU erased Friday's early deficit with a pair of ninth-inning home runs from Sean Swenson and Nate Kirkpatrick, but St. Bonaventure manufactured its second walk-off of the weekend, 17-16.
 
LEADING OFF:

  • VCU smacked five home runs in the game, the most since the Rams' A-10 Championship victory over Richmond last year
  • Sean Swenson was the first Ram since Brandon Eike in March 2023 to drive in seven runs in a game, homering twice and collecting a career high-tying four hits

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • St. Bonaventure worked up a steep 8-1 lead through the first inning on Friday to lead off the second game of the doubleheader
  • Werchan and Flores homered in the second inning, before the 8-3 ballgame was suspended due to weather conditions
  • The Rams worked up back-to-back big innings, scoring four runs in the fourth and fifth innings on four RBI walks, an error and a three-run home run off the bat of Swenson
  • Campbell rolled through three scoreless frames before SBU got two to take back their lead in the eighth, 13-11
  • Stringing together three hits and a pair of home runs in the top of the ninth, VCU took a 16-13 lead, before the Bonnies managed their second walk-off victory of the weekend with a two-run single
