RAMS DROP ONE-RUN GAME TO ST. BONAVENTURE

VCU outhit the Bonnies 14-13, but fell by a Run

Score: St. Bonaventure 11, VCU 10
Location: St. Bonaventure, N.Y. (Handler Park)
Records: VCU 14-33 (7-17), St. Bonaventure 16-27 (7-17)

THE SHORT STORY: Sean Swenson continued his streak of late clutch hitting, bringing the Rams within one run in the ninth, but VCU baseball was unable to overcome the deficit, falling to St. Bonaventure 11-10 on Sunday.

LEADING OFF:

  • Trent Adelman had three RBI and a pair of hits, including his third home run, extending his on-base streak to 26 games
  • Every Ram in the starting lineup had at least one hit
  • Casey Kleinman, Adrian Jimenez, Nate Kirkpatrick and Nick April-Gath each joined Adelman with two hits
  • Swenson belted his fourth ninth-inning hit in as many games, driving in his seventh run of the ninth
  • Freshman right-hander Riley Roarty made his first collegiate start
  • Max Moore, who was outstanding out of the bullpen over three appearances this week, was the pitcher of record for the Rams after he faced his first trouble in the eighth inning
  • The Rams outhit the Bonnies 14-13 and committed no errors to SBU's three

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • St. Bonaventure led off the series finale with a long ball to center field
  • The Rams put up a six-spot in the third inning as a Jacob Lee two-run double opened the scoring for VCU before Jimenez and Adelman drove in six runs to take the Rams' lead
  • Over the next three innings, the Bonnies managed five runs, pulling within a run of VCU through five frames, 7-6
  • Aided by an error in the Bonnies' outfield, Werchan came across with an insurance run for VCU to strike a two-run lead, but Bona had a loud eighth inning to overcome the deficit with five runs
  • The visiting Rams needed three runs to force extra innings, but managed only a pair on a two-run single from Swenson to fall 11-10 as SBU completed the weekend sweep
