RAMS FALL IN OVERTIME AT ODU

Mary-Anna Asare led VCU with 17 points

The short story: The Rams and Monarchs battled in a game with 10 ties and four lead changes but the Monarchs edged VCU in overtime.
 
OPENING TIP:

  • Mary-Anna Asare led VCU with 17 points and five rebounds
  • Mykel Parham grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds
  • Valentina Ojeda was the other Ram in double figures with a career-high 10 points
  • VCU shot 36 percent from the floor while ODU shot 32 percent. The Rams shot 36 percent from 3-point range while limiting ODU to just 20 percent
  • ODU led 11-6 in points off turnovers and went 9-of-14 from the line while VCU shot 6-of-8
  • The Lady Monarchs were led by Simone Cunningham who had 13 points and six rebounds

 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After an early back-and-forth, ODU used a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter
  • The Rams trailed ODU 16-7 before an 8-0 run of their own got VCU back within 16-15 with 4:05 left before halftime on an Alexis Black jumper
  • An Asare 3-pointer cut VCU's deficit to 23-20 at halftime
  • The Rams hung around and VCU took the lead at 32-31 following back-to-back Ojeda baskets with 4:02 left in third quarter
  • The teams traded blows the rest of the way and ODU led 46-44 with 4:33 left. The teams held each other scoreless until Torgut tied the game at 46-46 with 1:37 remaining and the game went to overtime
  • The Rams had a chance to tie the game trailing 53-51 but Jennifer Ezeh missed a tightly contested turnaround layup with 11 seconds left
