HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Rams first got on the board in the opening inning on a dropped pop-up as Casey Kleinman came across to score after reaching on a leadoff walk
  • Sean Swenson followed the two-out Monarch error with VCU's first grand slam of the year, giving the Rams a five-run first inning
  • A perfectly-executed double steal brought Werchan home and Jimenez drove in a second run on a groundout to match Old Dominion's two in the first inning, 7-2
  • In the home half, the Monarchs had a loud answer, scoring six runs to take an 8-7 lead
  • Moore went three up, three down in the third inning and allowed just one run to score over the next three frames, allowing the Rams to tie it up at 9-9 in the fifth inning
  • VCU batted around the lineup in a breakout sixth inning as Jimenez belted a go-ahead single into right-center field for double-digits and Henson smacked his grand slam over the scoreboard, before Kirkpatrick's first double sealed the six-run inning for a 15-9 game
  • Cooper Campbell struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to leave the bases loaded for the Monarchs, holding the Rams' lead
  • Werchan capped his four-hit night with a run-scoring double in the eighth, driving in VCU's last run of the game and the Monarchs scratched four runs across in the final four innings, but the Rams' pitching staff held on for the win, 16-13
