The short story: Graduate student John Casper shattered a 31-year-old school record on the way to gold in the hammer to highlight VCU's opening day of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in Fairfax, Va.
 
THROWS
Casper, a native of York, Pa., uncorked a toss of 62.57 meters on his first attempt in the hammer, and it held up for the victory. That mark bested Tom Johnson's 1994 school record of 61.74 by a comfortable margin to secure his third career Atlantic 10 Conference title
 
JUMPS
Junior David Coles leaped a personal-best 7.44 meters on his final attempt to capture second in the long jump. It's the best long jump finish in an A-10 meet of the Alexandria, Va. native's career. Sophomore Isaiah-Taji Kargbo-Owens also recorded a personal-best in the event for the Rams
 
SPRINTS
  • Freshman Christian Hallums ran a season-best 21.31 – the second-fastest of the day -- to reach the 200-meter final
  • Freshman Marcus Acheampong is headed to the 110-meter hurdle finals after clocking 14.36 seconds in Saturday's prelims
  • Freshman Jayden Hines and sophomore Jude Okafor advanced out of the 400-meter preliminary round. Hines hit the tape in 47.53 seconds, a personal-best, while Okafor ran 48.19
  • Sophomore Emmanuel Oche outpaced the field in the 100 prelims. He clocked 10.36 seconds, more than a tenth of a second faster any other runner

NEXT UP
Action at the A-10 Championships will wrap up on Sunday in Fairfax. Field events will get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the women's shot put, while the women's 10,000 meters, which was postponed by lightening Saturday, will begin at 9:15 a.m.
