BASEBALL QUIETS GEORGE WASHINGTON BATS, CLINCHES SERIES

VCU limited GW to just one scoring inning to take the weekend

Score: VCU 4, GW 2
Location: Arlington, Va. (Barcroft Park)
Records: VCU 10-21 (4-8), George Washington 17-14 (6-6)

THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball limited George Washington to just one scoring inning on Sunday, clinching its second series victory in as many weekends with a 5-2 win in the rubber match. With one swing deep to center field the exception, the Rams were outstanding on the mound, giving up just four hits and three walks, while combining for nine strikeouts.

LEADING OFF:

  • Jack Hoeymans and Zach Peters were electric out of the bullpen, combining for 5.1 scoreless innings
  • Peters earned his team-leading third save and the second of the weekend with two perfect innings of work
  • The Rams had their fourth double-digit hit total in the last five games
  • Trent Adelman belted his fourth double of the week and had another multi-hit game
  • Frers went a career-long 3.2 innings of work, striking out four batters and giving up a pair of hits and two late runs
  • VCU advances to 4-8 in conference play and secures its 10th win of the season

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • VCU scored first again, mimicking their start to the opening game of the series, with Nick Flores rounding the bases after drawing a leadoff walk in the second inning and coming around to score on back-to-back hits from Swenson and Kleinman
  • Adding to their lead in the third frame, three singles separated by a fielder's choice, allowed an RBI single from Flores before Adelman lined a two-run double to give VCU a 4-0 lead
  • Frers carried his outstanding scoreless work into the fourth inning, getting two quick outs before giving up a walk to just the second GW baserunner of the game and giving up the lone scoring play on a fluke inside-the-park home run, cutting the lead to 4-2
  • Hoeymans retired the final Rev of the fourth and took this scoreless outing through the seventh inning
  • VCU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning as Kleinman led off with a first-pitch single through the left side and came around to third with a stolen base and single from Kirkpatrick before Jacob Lee notched an RBI on a fielder's choice
  • Peters shut down the remainder of the George Washinton lineup, closing out the game with two perfect frames for the 5-2 victory
