The short story: Senior Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir added to her stocked trophy case to lead a 1-2 VCU finish in the hammer throw, while the Rams' track corps raced through the preliminaries to set the stage for a Sunday showdown during the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in Fairfax, Va.
 
THROWS
  • Hallgrimsdottir was dominant again on the way to her fourth consecutive A-10 hammer throw title. It was the All-American's third attempt of 67.22 meters that officially claimed the win, but any of Hallgrimsdottir's four successful marks Saturday. would've earned a comfortable victory. Hallgrimsdottir will finish her career as a seven-time Atlantic 10 Conference individual champion
  • Sophomore Blanca Pereira claimed silver in the hammer with a mark of 58.80 meters, the best A-10 Championship finish of her career
  • Sophomore Madison Griffin fired a career-best throw of 48.16 meters to claim second in the javelin, the third-best in the A-10 this year. Dayton's Casey Bogues held off Griffin with a record-breaking effort of 53.12

SPRINTS

  • Freshman Indira O'Neil equaled her personal-best of 14.19 seconds to advance to the 100-meter hurdle finals
  • Sophomore Jaliyah Person clocked 54.86 and coasted to a second-place finish in the 400-meter prelims. She will advance to Sunday's final
  • Junior Asia Powell and senior Lauryn Taylor will both run in the 100-meter final after running 11.73 in the prelims. Taylor and Powell also both advanced in the 200. Taylor clocked the second-best time of the prelims – 23.88 – while Powell crossed in 24.21
  • Nia Warren ran a personal-best 2:11.36 to advance to the 800-meter final. The junior placed second in her heat 

JUMPS
Sophomore Amaya Wiggins leaped a season-best 5.81 meters to place sixth in the long jump and score the first A-10 Championship points of her career
 
MULTI
Senior Jailah Channer sits seventh in the heptathlon standings through four events. She placed fifth in the field in both the high jump and shot put and has racked up 2,832
 
DISTANCE
Sophomore Shreya Krishnamurthy ran the fastest 1,500 of her VCU career
 
NEXT UP
Action at the A-10 Championships will wrap up on Sunday in Fairfax. Field events will get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the women's shot put, while the women's 10,000 meters, which was postponed by lightening Saturday, will begin at 9:15 a.m.
