VCU CLAIMS USTFCCCA ACADEMIC AWARD; THREE RAMS EARN INDIVIDUAL HONORS

Black & Gold honored for 10th straight year

RICHMOND, Va. – The wins keep coming for the VCU's Women's Track & Field program. This time, it's for the Rams' work in the classroom.

The Black and Gold was named an All-Academic Team this week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while three Rams claimed individual honors.

The USTFCCA annually honors programs that post a 3.0 grade-point-average (on a 4.0 scale) or better. This year's team award is VCU's 10th straight under Head Coach Jon Riley. The Rams wrapped up the 2024-25 academic year with a team GPA of 3.6, up from last year's lofty 3.48 mark.

In addition, sophomore Madison Griffin (Blairstown, N.J.), senior Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir (Hvanneyri, Iceland) and sophomore Blanca Pereira (Ourense, Spain) were honored as USTFCCA All-Academic Athletes for their work in the classroom for the second straight year.

Griffin, who is majoring in Mechanical Engineering, placed second in the javelin at the Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Championships in May and qualified for the NCAA East Region First Round to cap a standout sophomore campaign.

Hallgrimsdottir, who was recently nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, is a five-time All-American in the weight and hammer throws, who recently completed her undergraduate degree in Biology. She also claimed a pair of A-10 All-Academic honors during her unforgettable VCU career. She improved her school records in the weight and hammer throws to 23.19 and 69.92 meters, respectively, this year.

Pereira, who is also majoring in Biology, was second only to Hallgrimsdottir in the hammer this spring's A-10 Outdoor Championships. She also earned a trip to the NCAA East Region First Round in Jacksonville, Fla. in May.
