HALLGRIMSDOTTIR SIXTH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS, BAGS FIFTH ALL-AMERICA HONOR
EUGENE, Ore. – Perhaps the toughest part of summing up the career of VCU's Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir is choosing the proper superlative.
But "historic" seems like a good place to start.
Hallgrimsdottir, a senior from Hvanneyri, Iceland, put a tidy bow on her nearly unparalleled VCU career Thursday when she recorded a mark of 68.66 meters to place sixth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon.
The finish earned her a fifth career All-America citation, including her fourth First Team honor. Hallgrimsdottir joins Maria Elena-Calle and Kiara Porter as the only Rams in VCU Women's Track & Field history to claim five All-America honors.
On Thursday at historic Hayward Field, Hallgrimsdottir's second attempt of 68.66 meters secured her a spot in the finals and eventually held up for sixth. Georgia's Stephanie Radcliffe (71.37m) captured the NCAA title, followed by Shelby Frank of Texas Tech (71.05m). Texas State's Lara Roberts (70.42m) secured bronze.
Thursday's effort marked her third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she has finished sixth, fifth and 15th the past three years, respectively. Hallgrimsdottir has also reached the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw the past two years, including 2025's National Runner-Up finish.
In addition to a mantle full of All-America awards, Hallgrimsdottir has racked up seven Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, two NCAA East First Round titles and has smashed both school and conference records in both the weight throw (23.19m) and hammer (69.92m) in her decorated four-year career.
