VCU RALLIES TO FOR EXTRAS, BUT ST. BONAVENTURE PREVAILS IN 11

Swenson forces extras with two-run double; Moore shines in relief

Score (Game 1): St. Bonaventure 10, VCU 9 (11 innings)
Location: St. Bonaventure, N.Y. (Handler Park)
Records: VCU 14-31 (7-15 A-10), St. Bonaventure 14-27 (5-17)

The short story: First baseman Sean Swenson ripped a game-typing double in the ninth, and left-hander Max Moore tossed five innings of outstanding relief, but VCU fell to St. Bonaventure in 11 innings Friday.

LEADING OFF

  • Moore hurled five innings of three-hit ball out of the VCU bullpen to keep the Rams within striking distance. He did not allow an earned run and struck out six in his longest outing of the season
  • Freshman catcher Jacob Lee launched his 13th homer of the season and finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Black and Gold
  • Freshman shortstop Nick April-Gath recorded four hits (4-for-6) at the plate for VCU, while four others registered at least two base hits
  • Swenson drove in three on the day and recorded a double and a single in six at-bats for the Rams
  • Gavin Constantine led the Bonnies with three hits, including the game winner

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Robert Mannino led off the Bona 11th with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. A short time later, Constantine bounced a single down the right field line to score Mannino
  • VCU trailed 6-0 after one and 9-3 heading into the ninth before staging a dramatic rally. The Rams led off the ninth with four straight singles. Two batters later, second baseman Adrian Jimenez drew a bases loaded walk to trim the Bonnies' lead to just 9-6 with one out. A sacrifice fly by Trent Adelman set the stage for Swenson, who blasted a double into the gap in left center to tie the game at 9-9

NOTABLE
Lee has hit 13 homers this season, which is tied with Jim Lewentowicz for the seventh-most in school single-season history. Lee has driven in a team-high 51 runs this season.
