The short story: Senior Caden Scarbrough and junior Braden O'Grady paced VCU as it opened its spring season this week at the Battle at Briar's Creek.
 
FIRST TEE

• Scarbrough fired an opening-round 72 and finished 5-over for the 54-hole event to earn a share of 42^nd for the Rams
• O'Grady carded a second-round 69 on the way to a 48^th-place effort
• Jan Rybczysnki (53^rd), Jacob Conklin (67^th) and Mac McGurn (70^th) rounded out the top five for the Black and Gold
• VCU placed 14^th overall in a field that included 35^th-ranked Charleston and No. 37 Wake Forest
