KAHFIANI AND FOUR RAMS EARN ATLANTIC 10 WOMEN'S TENNIS AWARDS
RICHMOND, Va. - VCU Women's Tennis Head Coach Rifa Kahfiani and four student-athletes received Atlantic 10 Conference honors, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Head Coach Rifa Kahfiani was named Coach of the year, as Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando and Mariam Ibrahim, and Sofia Jane Thorne were named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team, and Senior Yelizaveta Karlova was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.
In her first year as head coach, Kahfiani led the Rams to a 14-11 record, which saw them win their first Atlantic 10 Championship since 2022 and make an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Sophomore Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team after posting a 10-11 record in singles dual matches, playing on courts one and two. The Santo Domingo, Ecuador native won 10 doubles matches, with nine of those wins coming on court one. This is Sabando's second straight season being named to an All-Atlantic 10 team, as last year she was named to the second team.
Fellow Sophomore Mariam Ibrahim received her first end-of-season conference recognition, being named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team. Playing on courts two, three, and four for the Rams, she posted an 8-8 record in singles and an 8-7 doubles record, with six of those wins coming on court one and being paired with Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando.
Freshman Sofia Jane Thorne was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team after her first season with the Rams. Posting a 15-5 record in singles, Thorne played on courts one, two, three, and four. For doubles, the Australian native mainly played on court two, where she finished the season with a record of 11-11, mainly playing with Lea Malazdra. She had a win streak of 11 singles matches during the spring season and was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week twice.
Yelizaveta Karlova also received end-of-season conference recognition, being named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team. The Almaty, Kazakhstan native recorded an 8-4 singles record, playing on courts two, three, and four, and a doubles record of 5-8 with all matches coming on court three. The senior finished her season winning six straight singles matches, and this is her third straight year being named to an All-Atlantic 10 team, as in the past two years, she was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team.
