VCU DROPS FINAL HOME CONTEST TO RICHMOND
Rams celebrated 15 graduating seniors
Score: Richmond 18, VCU 6 (7 inn.)
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 14-37 (7-20), Richmond 32-17 (13-14)
THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball celebrated its senior class prior to Sunday's game in its final home game of the season in The Diamond, but Richmond capitalized on mid-game defensive mishaps to take the Rams down in seven innings.
LEADING OFF:
- Sean Swenson went 3-4 on his senior day, belting his ninth home run of the year with a double and five RBI
- Casey Kleinman leads the nation in toughest to strike out with just three strikeouts in his 126 at bats, which currently stands as the second-best mark in program history
- Freshmen Nick Flores and Adrian Jimenez joined Swenson and Kleinman with hits in the contest
- Freshman catcher Jacob Lee drew a ninth-inning RBI walk
- Senior James McGrady made his first start of the season
- Jack Goleski made his first appearance of the season on senior day, recording the final pair of outs for the Rams
- Richmond's Chayse Gruber earned the victory in the contest
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A sacrifice fly and run-scoring single off the bats of Richmond in the opening frame produced the only runs of the first three innings, giving the visitors an early advantage
- With a two-run single, UR extended its lead to four, but a senior day three-run shot from Swenson brought the game back within reach for the Rams, 4-3
- The Spiders produced three back-to-back big innings, doing the most damage with six unearned runs in the sixth inning, to take a commanding 18-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh
- Lee walked in a run and Swenson drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the day in the seventh, but the Rams left the bases loaded, unable to erase the run-rule deficit to fall in seven innings
UP NEXT:
VCU will conclude its season on the road at UMass this weekend on Thursday-Saturday, May 15-17.
