Score: GM 6, VCU 5
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 11-24 (5-10), George Mason 23-13 (10-5)
THE SHORT STORY: After pulling off a strong finish in Saturday's doubleheader to even the series, VCU fell in a one-run ballgame, 6-5, to drop the weekend against George Mason on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.
LEADING OFF:
- Nick Frers went a career-long 4.0 innings of work, allowing just one earned run to score
- Jacob Lee hit his ninth home run of the season, joining Danny Lopaze (10) and Jason Dubois (1998) as just the third true freshman in program history with the mark
- Lee also had his team-leading fourth game with four or more RBI
- Adrian Jimenez had his third two-hit game of the week, belting two doubles
- Zachary Peters made his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance out of the bullpen and his eighth of the season without giving up an earned run
- VCU and George Mason were tied with eight hits apiece
- James McGrady was the Rams' pitcher of record
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Rams got on the board first with Lee's two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning, driving in Adelman after he reached on a single, ending the inning with a 2-0 lead
- Frers kept George Mason scoreless until the third inning, when Patriots' Lucas Albert reached on an error and rounded the bases aided by a single from Owen Clyne
- The visitors tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, 2-2
- Spencer Sullivan drove in the go-ahead third run on a single to left field after Jimenez doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, but George Mason returned with two runs in the fifth to take back the lead
- Both teams scored a pair of runs in the seventh, as Lee drove in Kleinman and Werchan to cut the deficit to just a run, making it 6-5 in favor of George Mason
- A couple of productive outs led Nick Flores to third base in the bottom of the ninth and Lee was intentionally walked on a 3-0 count, but a fly out to right field sealed the 6-5 score
UP NEXT:
The Rams will return to the road on Tuesday, April 15 as they take on Old Dominion at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va., before heading to Saint Louis, Mo., for a three-game Atlantic 10 weekend series on Thursday-Saturday, April 17-19.
