CAVALIERS OUTLAST RAMS’ LATE COMEBACK BID

VCU scored six runs in the final three innings

Score: Virginia 9, VCU 8
Location: Charlottesville, Va. (Disharoon Park)
Records: VCU 14-30 (7-14 A-10), Virginia 25-16 (11-10 ACC)

THE SHORT STORY: VCU scored six runs in the final three innings to claw back within a run of Virginia on Tuesday, outhitting the host 13-12 and falling just short of completing the comeback. Casey Kleinman, Adrian Jimenez and Sean Swenson factored in on VCU's first triple play since 2014.

LEADING OFF:

  • Kleinman launched his first home run of the year and the fifth of his VCU career
  • Swenson had a three-hit night and drove in the Rams' eighth run in the final frame
  • On the mound, Max Moore made a strong appearance out of the bullpen, with 2.2 no-hit innings, his only baserunners reaching on a pair of errors and a fielder's choice
  • Nick April-Gath went 2-2 and knocked in a career-best three runs
  • Also collecting a pair of hits on the night were Spencer Sullivan and Kleinman
  • Entering the game in relief, both James McGrady and Cade Dressler each tossed scoreless innings
  • Miles Garrett was the pitcher of record for the Rams
  • Virginia sweeps the season series, 2-0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Despite a first-inning double by Jacob Lee, Virginia got on the board first with a one-out solo shot to open the scoring
  • The Rams kept it a tight game through three innings, scoring a pair in the top of the second on an April-Gath sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Sullivan
  • With a triple play ball, McGrady erased his two baserunners to face the minimum in the third and hold a 2-2 tie
  • Six runs scored on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, digging the Rams into a hole they were unable to claw back from
  • Moore held the score into the seventh, when Kleinman got the Rams' first runs since the second frame on the board with a three-run home run for an 8-5 game
  • Virginia answered with a run-scoring single in the seventh, and April-Gath matched, driving in two for VCU to bring the game back within two runs
  • Kleinman doubled down the line and came around to score on a piece of two-out hitting from Swenson, but the Rams were unable to score another, falling 9-8

UP NEXT:
The Rams look to build on last weekend's series victory as they continue their road trip to Olean, N.Y. this weekend. VCU will take on St. Bonaventure in a three-game Atlantic 10 series on Friday-Sunday, May 2-4.
