FORDHAM EVENS WEEKEND SERIES SATURDAY

Jacob Lee belted his 11th home run

Score: Fordham 11, VCU 1
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 13-29 (6-14 A-10), Fordham 21-23 (11-9 A-10)

THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball fell even in the weekend series against Fordham on Saturday afternoon, dropping an 11-1 contest to follow up its Friday evening victory. The teams will play for the series on Sunday.

LEADING OFF:

  • Jacob Lee belted his 11th home run of the year, the most by a true freshman in program history and just five homers away from Tyler Locklear's overall freshman home run record of 16
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Elijah Coston notched his first career hit, going 1-2 in the game
  • Trent Adelman extended his on-base streak to a team-best-tying 21 games as he was hit by his 17th pitch of the season—only 11 Rams have been hit by more pitches in a single season since 1979
  • Nick April-Gath extended his hitting streak to five games, the longest active streak on the team
  • Fordham's Mike Rabayda tossed a complete game, allowing just the one VCU run and six hits
  • Daniel Bucciero led the Fordham offense with five hits
  • Nick Frers was the pitcher of record for VCU

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the opening inning, Frers worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the visiting Rams scoreless through the first
  • Lee crushed a two-out solo home run 409 feet to left field as VCU looked to keep its momentum from Friday night's victory
  • Fordham put together three back-to-back three-run innings on 10 hits to bring the score to 9-1
  • In the third inning, Casey Kleinman singled and Lee walked the bases loaded, but a fielder's choice stranded the most runners VCU would have on base
  • The visitors added one more run in the fifth frame on a home run and brought in the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the 11-1 final

UP NEXT:
VCU will return to the road for the week, kicking off a four-game road trip in Charlottesville, Va., against Virginia on Tuesday, April 29, before continuing Atlantic 10 play at St. Bonaventure on Friday-Sunday, May 2-4.
