LEE BREAKS FRESHMAN HOME RUN RECORD, VCU CONCLUDES SEASON WITH SWEEP

Jacob Lee smashes freshman-record 17th home run

Score: VCU 7, Massachusetts 4
Location: Amherst, Mass. (Earl Lorden Field)
Records: VCU 17-37 (10-20), Massachusetts 14-34-1 (7-23)

THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball continued its weekend dominance through the final game, concluding the 2025 season with a series sweep of UMass. Jacob Lee's first inning home run opened the scoring and Zachary Peters stranded three on base to slam the door in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-4 victory.

LEADING OFF:

  • Jacob Lee broke Tyler Locklear's freshman home run record with a first-inning solo shot, his 17 are the third-most in a single season in program history
  • Lee also had three hits in the game, for his team-high 20th multi-hit contest of the year
  • Casey Kleinman, who struck out just four times in his 138 at-bats, joined Donnie Phillips as just the second player in VCU history to finish the season with fewer then five strikeouts in over 100 at-bats
  • Nick Flores became just the fifth freshman in program history with nine home runs
  • VCU had their second four-home run game of the weekend as Nate Kirkpatrick went yard and Danny Estrada hit his first as a Ram
  • Sophomore right-hander Nick Frers struck out four over 4.0 innings in his final start of the season
  • Combining for 5.0 innings of work out of the bullpen, Riley Roarty, Elijah Coston and Peters didn't allow a hit and gave up just one run
  • VCU's 36 runs were the most in a weekend series since scoring 43 at South Florida in 2023
  • The Rams swept their first series of the year with the most runs (36), hits (40) and home runs (11) in a series this season
  • VCU finished the season 10-20 in Atlantic 10 play with an overall 17-37 record

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • For the second time this weekend, the first run across was courtesy of a Lee home run, this time in a historic fashion to open the scoring early
  • Kirkpatrick drove in his first of two runs on a groundout and Estrada belted his first homer as a Ram to take a four-run lead
  • The Minutemen brought the game back within a run over the next two frames, as Beverly managed a first-pitch home run and a pair of run-scoring singles closed the Rams' lead to 4-3
  • The freshmen came out swinging in the fifth as Flores homered, April-Gath doubled into the center field gap and Lee batted him in for some insurance
  • A costly free pass allowed Tirado to round the bases on stolen bags and cross home with the Minutemen's final run of the series on an RBI groundout
  • Kirkpatrick's day wasn't done when he lifted one to left field to lead off the ninth, but the next three Rams went down quietly with a 7-4 lead
  • In the bottom of the ninth, a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position and a one-out error loaded the bases for UMass in its final push, but Peters rolled three outs to earn his fifth save of the year, completing the weekend sweep for the Rams
