TONY GUZZO NAMED TO 2024 VBCA HALL OF FAME CLASS

Former VCU head baseball coach honored by VBCA

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Baseball Coaches Association will name the late Tony Guzzo a member of its third VBCA Hall of Fame Class on Dec. 13 among nine others to make up a class of 10 honorees.

The Hall of Fame reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tyler Haynes Commons on the Richmond campus following the VBCA annual convention. The reception is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased at VBCA.org.

Guzzo, who passed away on Oct. 10, was the first full-time coach in program history and led the Rams to their first Conference Championship and two NCAA postseason appearances, while coaching up 16 MLB Draft selections and five big leaguers. In 12 seasons at the helm of the VCU baseball program, from 1983-94, he amassed a then-record 329 wins and guided the Rams to unprecedented heights, establishing a winning culture and laying the groundwork for future generations of Rams.

In 1992, the second of VCU's NCAA Tournament bouts under Guzzo's leadership, he led the Rams to the Central Regional final with a 4-2 victory over host Texas. Falling in a second game to the host team, VCU's historic season ended just a game away from the College World Series.

Following VCU, Guzzo returned to his hometown of Norfolk, Va., and took the reins at Old Dominion, where he served as the head man from 1995-2004. He is well known around the central Virginia baseball community for his lasting impact on the people, players and programs he encountered.

Guzzo will become the second VCU coach named in the VBCA Hall of Fame, as the late Paul Keyes was inducted in the inaugural 2022 class.
